Brewer Stephen Andrews has created the perfect Valentine's Day beer: Razzle Dazzle Raspberry Chocolate Stout! We asked him a few questions about the beer, which is on draft in our tasting room for a limited time.
What’s your position and how long have you been with Two Roads?
I am a Shift Brewer at Two Roads and have been with the company since Dec. 2014, so a little over 2 years.
What was your inspiration for the beer?
My inspiration for the beer was chocolates/sweets. I saw these flavors paired well together, and wanted to try and make a beer that encapsulated those flavors.
Anything special or unique to your brewing process?
The stout started as a normal chocolate stout, but used a healthy dose of chocolate wheat malt instead of chocolate barley malt. I feel that the chocolate wheat gives a softer and smoother chocolate character with less bitter and biting character than chocolate barley malt. Cocoa powder was also added during the brewing process to enhance the chocolate character. During fermentation, more cocoa powder, and over 200 lbs of raspberry puree were added to the fermenter to create the raspberry and chocolate character that is present in the beer.
What do you like about being a brewer at Two Roads?
Being a brewer at Two Roads is great. We brew more than 100 different beers a year, whether it's Two Roads brand or one of the many contract beers. We use state of the art equipment and get to see so many different approaches to the brewing process.
